Denture reline Vs Rebase: Everything you need to know

Denture reline

The shape of your jawbone and gums tends to change, as you get older resulting in that your replacement teeth won’t fit as well as they used to before. A  denture reline  is a process of adding a new thin layer designed to adapt the fitting tissue surface of your denture through a simple procedure to accommodate such changes to your mouth and gums, ensuring that your dentures will fit better and feel comfortable once again. The goal of relining is to create denture stability while enhancing the fit, suction, and chewing ability of the person wearing them as well as enabling you to stop wearing denture adhesives. When used with the correct indications, relining can extend the use of a set of dentures for many years.

There are two types of denture relines:

  • Hard denture reline: A hard denture is performed using laboratory processing procedure or by the material suitable for chair side curing to improve the stability of your dentures.
  • Soft denture reline: For patients having sensitive gums, hard dentures might cause discomfort and sore spots. In this case soft denture reline is an appropriate choice as it uses a soft and pliable material which makes the denture more comfortable to wear.

Denture rebase

A denture rebase is an extension of a laboratory-processed reline that can realign denture teeth however in  reline Vs rebase, rebasing is a much more drastic adjustment and needs a thorough replacement of all the acrylic with new denture rebase material in the denture base in order to extend the life of the dentures. This technique is used when the denture teeth are in good condition however the acrylic is not and requires a complete adjustment. It improves the fit of your dentures, and it replaces cracked, discolored, defective or brittle acrylic with a new one which also allows the dentist to reposition the teeth.
