Same-day crown vs. lab-created crown: What’s the difference?

Dental crowns are a great way to restore, improve, and protect weakened, broken, or damaged teeth. Dental crowns can also be used to cover up a discolored or visually unappealing tooth. There are various types of dental crowns available including lab-made and same-day or CEREC crowns. Here are some of the differences between CEREC and lab-made crowns:

Same-day crowns

A same day crown is a type of dental restoration that is fabricated using CEREC technology which is designed and fits over your teeth in a single appointment. These dental crowns use computer-aided design and CAD/CAM technology to create CEREC crowns.

Advantages

Here are some of the advantages of a same-day crown

  • With same-day dental crowns you’ll be able to save a significant amount of time.
  • Same-day/ CEREC crowns usually need less drilling to install meaning that your recovery time will be shorter.
  • The advanced 3D technology in this dental treatment replicates even the tiniest detail of your teeth making them nearly indistinguishable from the rest of your teeth and natural smile.
  • Same day crown cost is affordable as it requires fewer dental visits and cheaper materials.

Disadvantages

Here are some of the few same day crown disadvantages

  • These crowns can only be made with ceramic which is less durable in comparison to other materials.
  • If you have a habit of grinding or clenching your teeth while sleeping, then you may end up cracking your crown.
  • The scanning software of CEREC has limited ability to detect deeper cracks in your teeth.

Lab-created crowns

A lab-created-crown  is fabricated in a dental laboratory. A digital or physical impression of your teeth is taken during your first appointment and sent to the dental laboratory for fabrication.

Advantages

Here are some of the advantages of a lab created crown

  • Lab-made crowns are made from materials like porcelain and metal that provide strength and durability to the crowns.
  • These crowns are able to handle large amounts of stress which means you won’t need a replacement crown for a long time.
  • Since lab-made crowns are handmade by professionals, you won’t have to worry about quality.

Disadvantages

Along with advantages there are also some downsides of lab-made crowns including:

  • It will be necessary for you to arrange multiple appointments with your dentist, and in the interim, you will need to wear a temporary crown, which can be rather uncomfortable.
  • The initial cost will be higher if you select a porcelain or metal crown.
