Pros and cons of same day crown.
Same day crowns are basically similar to traditional crowns; however, they can be made and installed in a single appointment under two hours. Same day crowns are created at in-office using CAD/CAM technology after the teeth are prepared and reshaped quickly to end your oral pain and discomfort. Your damaged, decayed or missing teeth can be fully restored and functional in just one appointment.Pros of same day crowns:
- Lifelike in appearance: The advanced system allows same day crowns to create highly accurate impressions and also make a more lifelike crown in appearance and feel. The CAD/CAM system is also able to capture the smallest crevices and shape variances in teeth. A physical impression can only make a rough estimation of the tooth when creating a mold for the traditional crown. Using a computerized system will allow a snugger fit and a more lifelike appearance and feel.
- Quicker results: Unlike traditional crowns that can take weeks before they’re ready for placement, same day/ CEREC crowns are crafted in-office and placed to your teeth all in just one appointment. This offers a quicker fix for your oral health problems and only needs a single visit to your dentist.
- Convenient: The dental implant is a long procedure from missing tooth to the placement of the full prosthesis. Instead of multiple appointments and having to wait for two weeks for a temporary crown used in the traditional method the patient can have a crown on the same day. Once the appointment is scheduled, the procedure can be completed within a few hours.
- Cost-effective: Even though same-day crowns and traditional crowns can cost around the same, same-day crowns cost less in the long term. Same day crowns can help save the patient from having to pay for an extra appointment to place the permanent crown or the temporary crown. Since these crowns have a better and comfortable fit, they last longer in comparison to a traditional crown.
- Promotes more comfort: The precise CAD/CAM technology used to create crowns allows dentists to design a restoration that fits accurately and comfortably. Unlike temporary crowns that can be an uncomfortable process to place and replace same day crowns allow a snugger fit.
Cons of same day crown:
- Only made from ceramic: Since the milling machine that creates same day crowns uses a block of ceramic to design your new crown. Some patients prefer traditional crowns that consist of metal, porcelain, ceramic or porcelain fused to metal crowns for their added durability due to the cons of same day crowns. If the patient wants a different type of crown, then traditional crowns are a consideration as they are more resistant to fracture or wear and tear.
- Below the gum-line fractures: Same day crown disadvantage is that the computerized system does not make an accurate impression if your tooth’s fracture extends any damage below the gum-line. Furthermore, a conventional crown is usually a better fit if this is the case.
